Building Process
Below you will see a high-level home building construction process guide using structural insulated panels (SIPs). Should you wish to construct yourself, a group of 3 to 4 people can build the house frame with limited tools in a relatively short period of time (for example, the wall erection step has been done in as quickly as one half a day for a single story average house). You may also need to hire sub-contractors for foundation, electrical, plumbing, heating/cooling, insulation, cabinets, and other unless you're familiar with these trades. You must obtain a building permit and determine your locality's regulations for all aspects of building. A General Contractor can perform all these duties should you hire one. | Determine your layout and pour a simple footing. Home can be installed on either a slab, a basement or a crawlspace. | | Once your footing is complete construct foundation stem walls (if on a crawlspace as shown above), install floor joists and sub-floor decking. |
| | Install exterior wall panels ( a 4'x 8' x 6 5/8" panel weighs 125 lbs) | | Build interior walls. This step can either be completed before or after roof system is installed. |
| | After wall erection is completed, the roof in installed. You may need to hire a crane if a multi-story house. | | Sheath, paper and shingle all roof surfaces to help make the structures weather tight. |
| | Door and windows openings are easily cut into the panels using the Prazi Beam Cutting tool (included with package) | | To make a cavity for header lumber, foam is easily scooped out of window and door openings using an electric hot-wire foam cutting tool (included with Package) |
| | Windows and doors are installed after openings are cut | | Apply your desired siding material. Examples include but are not limited to brick, vinyl, and hardi-plank. |
| | Grade the lot to level and clear of all construction debris prior to install of any exterior items (e.g., porch systems, grass plantings, etc...) | | Complete all non-structural work, including electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting, flooring, insulation and other (like solar collectors). |
